Postgame thoughts: NY 0-0 SKC

Sporting KC extended their unbeaten streak to 11 matches with a 0-0 draw at Red Bull Arena. It was another solid defensive performance and has Jimmy Nielsen within one of matching Tony Meola's single season shutout record.
Defense wins championships
NY consistently had more possession and chances but the KC defense held strong. They were bending at moments but never broke. The consistency to which this team has defended all season has been extremely impressive and that was on display at Red Bull Arena. Performances like this will be needed in the playoffs when a draw on the road sets up nicely for a second leg at home.
Nielsen once again
Jimmy Nielsen continues to have one of the best seasons by a goalkeeper ever in MLS. He's one shutout behind the single season record (has 15) and his goals against average is comfortably under 1.00. He was tested multiple times on Saturday night and was up to the challenge on every occasion. He has't gotten a lot of attention but Nielsen certainly deserves to be in the discussion as a possible MVP and/or Goalkeeper of the Year.
No injuries
One of the most important things about Saturday's match (in addition to getting the point) was there were no major injuries. Graham Zusi, Nielsen, Kei Kamara, Matt Besler, and all the regular starters didn't have to subbed off because of an injury. There's only one match remaining and it's crucial to keep players healthy to be at full strength heading into the playoffs. Roger Espinoza, who didn't travel to NY, is expected to be fit by the start of the playoffs and possibly for Wednesday's match.
