Sporting Kansas City’s community outreach program Sporting 22 is now accepting applications for the 2012 season. Sporting 22 brings together 22 proven high school students to explore, develop and execute local initiatives that use the sport of soccer to impact the overall health and well-being of thousands of kids in Kansas City and beyond. Students have from June to December to activate their programs and start a lifelong path of civic engagement in the communities they serve.

“Through Sporting 22, our long-term goal is to inspire young people to be agents of positive change through their involvement in soccer, school and community,” said Robb Heineman, CEO of Sporting Club. “Sporting Club has a strong commitment to the community and particularly helping young people become successful leaders on and off the field. We believe Sporting 22 is an extension of our larger efforts to be a philanthropic leader in professional sports.”

Teva Neuroscience, presenting sponsor of Sporting 22, is joined by supporting sponsors Pepsi and the Kansas City Soccer Foundation for a second year and will award $2,000 college scholarships to high school students involved in Sporting 22. A class valedictorian will be named and will receive an additional $2000 scholarship award. Further, each student will receive a sports equipment package to implement their program and an official Sporting 22 jacket.

“I would like to thank Teva Neuroscience, Pepsi and the Kansas City Soccer Foundation for their continued commitment to Sporting 22,” Heineman added. “Their support has a huge impact on the communities we serve and provides a tremendous leadership opportunity for these young men and women.”

“Teva is proud to once again serve as the presenting sponsor of Sporting Kansas City’s Sporting 22 program,” said Greg Westbrook, Vice President, HR Services, Teva Neuroscience. “Its mission, to promote positive efforts by our area's young people to impact others in the community, aligns with our longstanding Pay It Forward philosophy of giving.”

The open application period for Sporting 22 is March 13, 2012 through April 9, 2012. During the application process students will be evaluated on their academic accomplishments, athletic endeavors and unique desire to make a personal contribution to their community through innovative initiatives. Interviews for qualified candidates will take place in April prior to the 2012-13 Sporting 22 class being announced in May.

Last year, Sporting 22 provided $46,000 in scholarship aid and showcased a strong commitment to community service and service-learning. Lars Hanson was named the 2011-12 Sporting 22 class valedictorian for his successful program, Ignite Your Game.
