Sporting Kansas City picked up their second consecutive draw in preseason with a 1-1 result against FC Tucson at the Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Arizona.
The match started out slowly in the opening minutes but quickly picked up momentum just before the ten minute mark, when Sporting KC took a 1-0 lead on a Soony Saad goal.
The goal was assisted by Chance Myers, who got behind the defense with an overlapping run and sent a cross into the box towards Saad. The Michigan alum was unmarked in the box and beat the goalkeeper with a diving header.
Sporting's lead was short-lived as the home side equalized through Patrick Wallen in the 11th minute. FC Tucson beat the Sporting KC offside trap and Wallen capped off the counterattack by slotting it into the back of the net.
FC Tucson didn't have a lot of possession throughout the match but created several good goal scoring opportunities. In the first half, the home side were denied by the post on two different occasions.
As the first half headed into the final 15 minutes, Sporting KC started to assert control of the match and consistently had solid chances in front of goal but were unable to convert them.
Sporting KC made several substitutions at halftime to bring on offseasons signings Ike Opara and Yann Songo'o along with 2013 SuperDraft pick Mikey Lopez.
Neither team were able to generate many chances in the second half but Sporting KC did continue to have the better run of play. For the second match in a row, Sporting used three goalkeepers with Jimmy Nielsen starting, Erik Kronberg coming around the 30 minute mark, and Jon Kempin finishing out the final third of the match.
Sporting KC would make a late charge in the final moments of the second half with two decent chances. Mitchell Cardenas was close to being one on one with the goalkeeper after a Christian Duke through ball but an FC Tuscon defender was able to make a sliding tackle to force a corner kick. On the ensuing corner kick, Michael Thomas sent a cross into the box that an unmarked Brian Fekete headed just over the crossbar.
Sporting Kansas City will conclude their preseason trip to Arizona on Friday with a match against the Portland Timbers at 7 PM CT. The match will be streamed live online at SportingKC.com/live
