MLS unveils 2022 regular season schedule

Major League Soccer today unveiled Sporting Kansas City’s 34-game schedule for the 2022 MLS regular season, which will kick off Sunday, Feb. 27 in Atlanta with the club’s first of 10 nationally-televised regular season matches and will conclude on Sunday, Oct. 9 at FC Dallas on Decision Day. The Audi 2022 MLS Cup Playoffs will then take place over three consecutive weeks with the 2022 MLS Cup set for Saturday, Nov. 5.

Season tickets for Sporting Kansas City’s 2022 campaign feature exclusive Season Ticket Member benefits, including complimentary away match tickets, and are available by calling 888-4KC-GOAL or visiting SportingKC.com. Sporting also offers a variety of ticket packages and promotions such as the Home Opener Pack, Marquee Match Pack and Captain’s Flex Pack with two additional ticket packages to launch on Friday with the release of the Summer of Sporting Pack and No Mercy Pack.

In addition, single-match tickets for Sporting Kansas City’s first five regular season home matches at Children’s Mercy Park in 2022 – featuring rivals Houston Dynamo FC and Real Salt Lake, Western Conference newcomer Nashville SC, and fellow MLS charter clubs Columbus Crew SC and FC Dallas – will go on sale at 10 a.m. CT on Thursday, Dec. 16 via SeatGeek. Single-match tickets for the remaining regular season home matches will be released at a later date.

Sporting Kansas City’s regular season home schedule in 2022 features a total of 17 matches, highlighted by 15 weekend dates with 11 matches on Saturdays and four fixtures on Sundays. Sporting has also announced the dates for several of the club’s annual theme matches at Children’s Mercy Park with the return of Retro Night, Sporting Salutes, Kick Childhood Cancer, Soccer For All and Sporting Sustainability among the notable matchday experiences.

In conjunction with today’s schedule release, Sporting has also launched a new My Five ticket contest presented by Hollywood Casino for supporters. Fans can select the five home matches they are most excited to attend in 2022 and be entered to win a ticket package to attend their top five matches.

Led by Manager Peter Vermes and captain Johnny Russell, Sporting will begin the team’s 27th season on Sunday, Feb. 27 against Atlanta United FC inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium with the earliest regular season match in club history airing live on FS1. The club’s highly anticipated home opener then arrives on Saturday, March 5 against longtime rivals Houston Dynamo FC with kick off set for 2:30 p.m. CT on Univision.

In addition to appearing on national television in the opening two weeks, Sporting Kansas City will have a pair of matches on ABC during the 2022 MLS season: a June 12 home match against Supporters’ Shield holders New England Revolution and a June 25 road match at perennial Western Conference contenders Seattle Sounders FC.

Sporting Kansas City will also have a pair of marquee matches during Heineken Rivalry Week in mid-July with rematches of the 2020 and 2021 Western Conference Semifinals. Sporting will play Minnesota United FC on Wednesday, July 13 live on ESPN before taking on Real Salt Lake on Sunday, July 17 during a three-match road trip that precedes a home-heavy finish to the regular season with eight of Sporting’s final 12 matches coming at Children’s Mercy Park.

Major League Soccer grows to 28 teams in 2022 with the introduction of expansion side Charlotte FC, one of six teams Sporting will not face during the regular season. Sporting will face each club in the Western Conference twice – once home and once away – for a total of 26 matches, with the remaining matches coming against eight of the Eastern Conference’s 14 teams.

Nashville SC moves to the Western Conference in 2022 and Sporting will play in the club’s new 30,000 seat soccer-specific stadium on June 19. In addition, Sporting will make the team’s first-ever trip to Citi Field to play reigning MLS Cup champions New York City FC on May 7.

Beyond the MLS regular season, MLS will host the 2022 MLS All-Star Game presented by Target on Aug. 10 at Allianz Field in Minnesota and Sporting KC will compete in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2022 following a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19. The tournament returns for its 107th edition with an expanded competition calendar and a revised format that will see some MLS clubs enter in the Third Round (April 19-21) and some MLS clubs enter in the Round of 32 (May 10-11). The Round of 16 (May 24-25), Quarterfinals (June 21-22) and Semifinals (July 26-27) will set the stage for the U.S. Open Cup Final on either Sept. 6-7 or Sept. 13-14.

In preparation for the 2022 campaign, Sporting will travel to Arizona from Jan. 17 to Feb. 19 for the team’s 2022 preseason presented by Children’s Mercy.
