Sporting Kansas City selected former Chicago Fire goalkeeper Alec Kann in Stage One of the 2015 MLS Re-Entry Draft. He spent most of the 2015 season with Chicago’s USL affiliate Saint Louis FC, recording 74 saves in 19 matches during the team’s inaugural campaign. He finished with a 76.3 save percentage, third best in the USL, before making six saves in his MLS debut on Oct. 25 against the New York Red Bulls.
A native of Decatur, Georgia, Kann joined Chicago ahead of the 2013 season from USL side Charleston Battery, where he began his professional career in 2012. The 6-foot-4 goalkeeper was loaned to the USL’s Charlotte Eagles in 2014 and made 57 saves across 17 appearances for the club.
A four-year starter at Furman University, Kann posted a 37-16-10 record with 18 shutouts and a 1.00 goals against average in 65 starts during his college career. As a senior in 2011, he earned NSCAA All-South Region honors, All-Southern Conference honors and NSCAA Scholar All-America accolades after leading Furman to a 14-4-4 record and an NCAA Tournament berth.
2016: Was named Sporting KC's Newcomer of the Year. Started 10 matches in all competitions, posting a 4-3-3 record with two shutouts and a 1.55 goals against average (930 minutes played). MLS regular season: Started seven matches and recorded two shutouts with a 2-2-3 record (630 minutes played, 17 saves, 1.57 GAA). Made his Sporting KC debut in a 1-1 draw at Vancouver on April 27, the second MLS start of his career. Earned the first win and shutout of his MLS career in a 1-0 result against the Portland Timbers on July 31. Made four saves, including two spectacular stops, in a 2-2 draw at FC Dallas on Aug. 13. Earned his second shutout win in a 2-0 result against Vancouver on Aug. 20. Tied an MLS career-high with six saves in a 2-0 loss at the Philadelphia Union on Aug. 27. Open Cup: Started two matches (210 minutes played, 3 saves, 1.71 GAA). Started and played 120 minutes in a 2-1 extra time win over Minnesota United FC on June 15. Started and played 90 minutes in a 3-1 fifth round loss at the Houston Dynamo on June 29. Swope Park Rangers: Made one appearance, starting and playing 90 minutes in a 4-0 win over Rio Grande Valley FC on June 8. CONCACAF Champions League: Started and played 90 minutes in a 3-1 win over Central FC on Oct. 19.
2015: MLS: Made his MLS debut in a 2-1 loss to the New York Red Bulls on Oct. 25, making six saves. USL: Recorded 74 saves in 19 matches for Saint Louis FC (5-7-7 record), finishing third in the USL with a 76.3 save percentage.
2014: On loan from the Chicago Fire, Kann made 17 appearances for the USL's Charlotte Eagles, making 57 saves in 17 matches.
