SKC Set US Open Cup Qualifier for May 25th

Marko Perovic free kick vs. Sporting KC

Sporting Kansas City will host the New England Revolution on Wednesday, May 25th in the final round of 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup qualifying. The venue and ticket information for the match will be announced at a later date.

The New England Revolution defeated D.C. United 3-2 on Tuesday night at the Maryland SoccerPlex for the right to face Sporting Kansas City in the play-in match next month. The winner between Sporting Kansas City and the New England Revolution will earn a berth as one of 16 teams in the Third Round of the 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, scheduled to begin on June 28th.

The U.S. Open Cup is the oldest annual team tournament in American sports history with origins in 1914 and is named after Lamar Hunt, the original founder of Sporting Kansas City. Like recent editions, the 2011 U.S. Open Cup will be a single-elimination tournament, with games tied after regulation extended by two 15-minute overtime halves. If a winner is not determined in overtime, advancement will be determined by kicks from the penalty spot.

Sporting Kansas City, who defeated the Houston Dynamo in the previous round of qualifying earlier this month, won the U.S. Open Cup in 2004, with current captain Davy Arnaud on the field as KC defeated the Chicago Fire 1-0 on a golden goal by striker Igor Simutenkov at Arrowhead Stadium.
