Sporting KC releases defender Mike Jones

Sporting Kansas City announced Thursday that defender Mike Jones has been released from the team's roster. Jones was selected with the 28th overall pick in the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft out of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

Jones, a St. Peters, Missouri native, did not make any MLS appearances for Sporting Kansas City, but scored during the team's pre-season victory over the Arizona Sahuaros at the 2011 Desert Cup and also started in the team's Reserve League opener at Houston.

He appeared in 60 games while at SIUE, recording six goals and two assists from the backline. As a senior centerback in 2010, Jones helped lead SIUE to seven shutouts in 19 games and was chosen to the Second Team All-Missouri Valley Conference.
