Sassano signs new contract with Sporting KC

Midfielder Luke Sassano Celebrating vs FC Dallas

Sporting Kansas City announced Monday that midfielder Luke Sassano has signed a new contract with the team. Per club policy, terms of the agreement will not be disclosed.

Sassano, 26, appeared in nine MLS matches for Sporting Kansas City last season, recording his first career goal in a 4-1 victory at FC Dallas. He also appeared in each of the club’s four games in their run to the 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals, while also seeing minutes in four Reserve League fixtures and the team’s scoreless draw against the English Premier League’s Newcastle United FC.

Fully recovered from successful surgery in September to repair a tear in the lateral meniscus of his right knee, Sassano now enters his fifth MLS season in 2012. Drafted in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft by the New York Red Bulls, the University of California product has played in 51 MLS matches, including postseason.

Sporting Kansas City opens the 2012 season on Saturday, March 10 at D.C. United, one week prior to the club’s home opener on Saturday, March 17 against the New England Revolution at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park.
