Champions League: Chelsea connections

Champions League: Chelsea connections -

Cue the UEFA Champions League anthem, the tournament final is upon us. Chelsea FC, looking to be crowned champions of Europe for the first time, take on Bayern Munich playing at home at Allianz Arena. The EPL sends it's eighth finalist in the past eight tournaments to challenge the Bundesliga runners-up and four-time Champions League winners. Monumental amounts of money (some speculating more than $125 million at stake for Chelsea), a massive global audience (over 300 million TV viewers worldwide sees it surpass the Super Bowl) and a place in sport's history (as well as the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan) awaits as the pinnacle of European club soccer unfolds at 1:45 p.m. CT today on FOX Sports (WDAF in Kansas City). Head to The Peanut downtown for this group's gathering.

We know you'll be watching. And we will be, too. Sporting KC players have settled into the team's hotel in Denver and there's no shortage of chatter on today's match-up. Most of the support seems to be behind Chelsea and we suspect there may be some links behind those loyalties for at least a few of the guys.

  • Forward Bobby Convey - A former member of Reading FC, Convey was no stranger to Chelsea FC during Reading's two seasons in the English Premier League from 2006-2008 (shown above against Chelsea centerback Paulo Ferreira).

  • Midfielder Julio Cesar - A UEFA Champions League veteran himself, Julio Cesar and Chelsea crossed paths in the knockout round of the 2007-08 tournament while playing for Greek club Olympiacos (shown above against Chelsea striker Didier Drogba).

  • Midfielder
    Roger Espinoza
    - The Honduran international was included on the 2008 Generation adidas tour in which the MLS squad trained at Chelsea's training ground in Cobham and played their reserve side with
    Espinoza in the starting XI
    .

Forward Kei Kamara is also a well-known backer of the Blues. Need proof? See his pup's Twitter account @ChelseaTheDog23 (shown on right). Speaking of Twitter, it's a pretty good source for realtime reaction and ubiquitous updates during the match. In fact, the last Champions League match broke the site's record for user activity.
