Sporting Kansas City fell by four goals to the Philadelphia Union on Saturday at PPL Park. The Union earned their first victory in League play in seven matches with a brace from Jack McInerney, a converted penalty from Lionard Pajoy and a late strike from Antoine Hoppenot. Philadelphia goalkeeper Zac MacMath recorded his fourth shutout of the season as Sporting Kansas City was held scoreless for the first time in six MLS matches.
The PhiladelphiaUnion opened the match with no shortage of excitement for the home crowd with a goal scored just one minute in by McInerney. A long ball in to rookie Raymon Gaddis on the right was crossed to Pajoy, who valiantly kept the ball in play, tapping it to McInerey, who fired from close range into the roof of the net.
The Union again threatened Sporting Kansas City in the ninth minute of play with a shot from 25 yards out by Gabriel Farfan. Thankfully for the visitors, goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen was prepared and knocked the ball away.
Sporting Kansas City’s quest for an equalizer did not pick up steam until the 27th minute when Chance Myers crossed from the right to Teal Bunbury, who made an angled header for the goal, but was just over the crossbar.
The 32nd minute saw more danger for Sporting Kansas City when Gabriel Farfan, sprinting down the left flank, crossed the ball into the unmarked U.S. international Freddy Adu, who shot just wide of the far right post.
The Union doubled their lead with a goal in the 43rd minute from McInerney, his second of the match. A swinging free kick from Adu on the left ricocheted in the crowded box before McInerney made contact and slotted the ball in past Nielsen fromclose range.
Sporting Kansas City sought to bag a goal before the end of the first half with a header from Kei Kamara in the 44th minute, but Union goalkeeper Zac MacMath was ready and collected the attempt.
Sporting Kansas City found their footing in the opening of the second half, maintaining possession and pressuring the Union’s backline. Philadelphia defender Carlos Valdes stopped several dangerous plays, dispossessing Sporting Kansas City players and clearing balls from both wings in the opening 10 minutes.
Bunbury continued to pose a threat to the Union when he received a header from Kamara at the mouth of the Union goal in the 62nd minute, but shot just wide of the far post. Bunbury again took a crack at the goal five minutes later when he took a shot at the top of the penalty area, but was denied by a sliding Valdes.
A great chance for the Union came in the 69th minute when Michael Farfan played a long, sailing ball in to Antoine Hoppenot, who went one-on-one with Nielsen but chipped the ball well over the goal.
A well-struck free kick from Graham Zusi in the 75th minute nearly found the back of the net after clearing the wall, but MacMath made a diving save and the Union’s two-goal lead stood.
Hoppenot drew a penalty in the 80th minute when Aurelien Collin was ruled to have dragged him down in the box. Pajoy sealed a victory for the home side when he converted the penalty in the 81st minute.
Philadelphia weren’t satisfied with the three-goal margin and scored a fourth in the 87th minute, when Hoppenot once again went one-on-one with Nielsen and chipped the ball in, scoring his first goal in MLS play.
Sporting’s final quest for a goal came in the 89th minute when Jacob Peterson crossed from the left to the awaiting head of Kamara but MacMath came off his line to preserve the clean sheet.
Sporting Kansas City’s next test comes in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals on Tuesday as they host the Dayton Dutch Lions of USL PRO at 7:30 p.m. CT at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park.
