Espinoza scores against Brazil at Olympics

Espinoza scores against Brazil at Olympics -

Sporting Kansas City midfielder Roger Espinoza capped off a strong showing at the 2012 London Olympic Games with a superb strike on Saturday in Honduras' 3-2 loss against Brazil in the quarterfinals. With the score level at 1-1 in the 48th minute and Honduras playing a man down after Wilmer Crisanto's first-half ejection, Espinoza put Honduras ahead with a well-taken attempt from outside the penalty area. Here's how CNN's Olympics live blog described it:

You know how I said earlier that Honduras had it all to do? Well all is exactly what they’ve just gone and done -- Roger Espinoza has scored. The ball seemed to take a lifetime to cross the line, Espinoza’s left-footed daisy-cutter going clean through the defender's legs and into Gabriel’s bottom right hand corner.

Espinoza also played a vital part in the game's opening goal, setting up Mario Martinez's volley that had Honduras ahead early, and received a standing ovation at St. James' Park upon his exit in the second-half stoppage time upon receiving his second caution of the match.

Espinoza, 25, started in three games for Los Catrachos at the Olympic Games, helping his country to a 2-2 draw against Morocco and a 1-0 upset of Spain during the group stage. He is scheduled to return to Kansas City on Sunday.
