Dwyer "can't wait" for start of the season with Orlando City

Dom Dwyer with Orlando City - 2013

It's not that Dom Dwyer isn't enjoying racking up the goals since being loaned from Sporting Kansas City to Orlando City SC. Dwyer just isn't reading much into it yet – not until he starts scoring during the upcoming USL Pro season.

“There's definitely a lot of hunger and desire to prove myself,” the young English forward told MLSsoccer.com by telephone on Tuesday. “Just because I've scored some goals – nothing against any college teams, but I've scored goals against college teams. That's not saying I'm back or I'm in form or I'm doing well. I'm finding the net, which is always good, but I'm looking forward to proving I can do that at any level.”

Dwyer, Sporting's first-round MLS SuperDraft pick in 2012, had a hat trick in last week's 6-0 exhibition win over Rollins College and followed that up with four goals on Monday in a 6-0 rout of the University of Tampa.

“I'm getting great service,” he said. “I feel like I'm part of a great team. It's a very unselfish team. Everyone shares the ball. They play the ball around beautifully and keep possession. I'm just the guy up top who has the easy job at the end of things.”

Orlando City finishes its exhibition season on Friday against the NASL's Tampa Bay Rowdies, then opens the regular season on April 7 against expansion side Phoenix FC.

“I can't wait,” Dwyer said. “The team's looking sharp. I feel good. I just want to get playing.”

Dwyer, one of four players loaned to the Lions under Sporting's new affiliation agreement with the USL Pro side, said he won't approach this season with one eye on his current club and one on the possibility of an early recall to Kansas City.

“As far as I'm concerned, right now I'm playing for Orlando City,” he said. “I'm enjoying myself, and I'm getting games. I'm part of this team now and I want to keep playing and win games, for myself and the guys. I want to keep banging in goals. If there are people who need to see that from me, or don't believe in me, I want to show them how it is – show my ability.”
