#TBT: Kansas City drafts Kerry Zavagnin

It's not often than a player is drafted twice in his career. But that's exactly what happened to Kerry Zavagnin. The Colorado Rapids selected the University of North Carolina Tar Heel standout with the 21st overall pick in the 1997 MLS Supplemental Draft. Zavagnin was prompty traded to the New York / New Jersey MetroStars for Peter Vermes (yes, that Peter Vermes ...) and played for the club for two years before joining the Lehigh Valley Steam of the A-League.

A year later, Zavagnin made his return to MLS when the then-Kansas City Wizards took the defensive midfielder with the 30th overall pick of the 2000 MLS SuperDraft. We all know what happened next.

Zavagnin became the club leader in games started (228) and minutes played (20,516) and led Kansas City to the 2000 Supporters' Shield / MLS Cup double and the 2004 U.S. Open Cup title. Throw in his 2012 Open Cup championship and 2013 MLS Cup chamionship as a member of the coaching staff, and it's only a matter of time before Zavagnin's name is plastered on the Sporting Legends wall.

So for today's #TBT, we're throwing it back to 14 years ago today, the day that Kansas City welcomed Zavagnin back to MLS and the day that Zavagnin's journey to becoming a KC hero began.
