Quotes: Sporting KC 1-0 New York Red Bulls

Peter Vermes vs. Real Salt Lake

Comments on the match...
I think the second group was better than the first. To me, the first group didn't work hard enough and part of that is smart enough, as well. They just didn't combine the two things: intelligence and work ethic. Because of that, we had to run a lot more. We didn't do the things that we normally do. It's good because I can use it against them all here the next couple days and I will. The second group played, I thought, very well to start the game. They had a good mindset on how to play and moved the ball. I was happy with that aspect. We did find some areas where, I think, we had some good concepts on what we want to do going forward and things like that. But we still have some work to do.

On preseason priority...
My biggest objective is to try to get the team in form as fast as I can because we have a home opener that we have to deal with in Seattle right away and then coming home with Cruz Azul. We have to be in form and that's going to be the difficult task ahead of us.

On pending roster movement...
There's a good possibility that there's going to be a few more players that will join the team. We're still working on those. The roster is like a living, breathing entity. It never is fixed. It's never done. You're constantly looking to improve and things change within the group. I always say, players don't stay the same. You're either getting better or you're getting left behind. What I am very pleased with and what I have found out in the preseason thus far is a lot of our young guys have made a big step forward this year. I'm very happy with the progression of a few guys and what they're starting to add to the team. I can see them getting minutes in some of the competitions that we are going to play in this year and hopefully they're going to be able to contribute in a very meaningful way.

On C.J. Sapong's form...
It's the fittest he has ever been. His attitude is fantastic. His movement off the ball is great. I give that to the fact that he has a great foundation of fitness coming in here. That was the important aspect. I think he learned a lot from last year. He took those lessons and went home and came back here re-charged and ready to go. He's focused and concentrated on what he wants to do as a player. He's been one of the top guys thus far in preseason.

On the play of Eric Kronberg...
I think Jimmy was a good mentor for Kronberg. Where Kronberg is probably different is, because he's younger and his frame, he's a lot more athletic than Jimmy was. Jimmy was excellent reading the game and very good at his positioning and came up with big saves because he made himself big a lot. Kronberg can do the same but he's very quick and excellent in aerial duels. He's done a tremendous job of getting us on the attack, especially when he wins balls because he has a great distribution from his arms. From that point of view, he's been very good and he's done a very good job thus far. We haven't played any meaningful games this season yet but he definitely has the full confidence of his teammates at the moment.
