#TBT: Humble beginnings

You might know the story ... or then again, maybe you don't.

Kansas City drafted Matt Besler and Graham Zusi in 2009 (strong work by Vermes and the technical staff). Within months, Zusi was living with Besler and his family in their Overland Park home. The pair slowly worked their way into Sporting KC's starting lineup, into the U.S. Men's National Team picture and eventually to the 2013 MLS Cup championship.

Five years after being in the same draft class, Besler and Zusi are set to feature for the U.S. Men's National team at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

So for today's Throwback Thursday, we're throwing it back to March 21, 2009, when an astute mother thought to take a picture of her son (and semi-adopted son) before their first professional soccer game.

A big thank you to Diane Besler for providing this gem.

And speaking of Zusi, the two-time MLS All-Star made a guest apperance this afternoon on 610 Sports Radio's The Drive with Danny Parkins and Carrington Harrison. Zusi discussed Sunday's match with Columbus, building off of a championship year and San Zusi. Listen to the podcast of his interview below or click here to listen to the full show.
