The plot thickens.
After another weekend of MLS action, the top seven teams in the Western Conference are separated by only seven points. Sporting KC sits only five points back of Western Conference leaders LA Galaxy following a 1-1 draw against the Seattle Sounders FC on Sunday. San Jose and Houston kept their playoff hopes alive last week, while Real Salt Lake's hang by a thread following Sunday's loss to the 'Quakes.
Magic Number
9 - The maximum number of points a team currently outside the top six can reach is 52 (San Jose). If Sporting KC reach 54 points (10 more than their current total), they'll be guaranteed a top-six finish in the Western Conference standings.

Sporting KC is also in ninth place in the Supporters' Shield standings but have the fourth highest points per game in MLS. The race for the Shield will likely come down to the last weekend of the year with the previous four winners averaging 64 points.
