By The Numbers: Sporting KC vs. Colorado Rapids - Oct. 21, 2015

Two pivotal home matches remain in Sporting Kansas Cityā€™s drive to the 2015 MLS Cup Playoffs, presented by Shawnee Mission Kia. First up is a meeting with the Colorado Rapids at 7:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday at Sporting Park ā€” a match that was originally slated for May 16 but was postponed due to inclement weather. The game will be televised on KMCI-TV 38 The Spot and SKCTV with radio broadcasts available on 99.3 FM and 1340 AM.


Sporting Kansas City (13-10-9, 48 points) currently occupies the sixth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference and would clinch a postseason berth with a win on Wednesday. The last-place Colorado Rapids (8-14-10, 34 points), already eliminated from playoff contention, will embrace the spoiler role and seek their first MLS victory in Kansas City since 2002. We take a closer look at the matchup in our By The Numbers previewā€¦


Head-to-head


  • Sporting KC has not lost to Colorado at home since September 2002, a run of 15 straight league games without defeat (11-0-4 including playoffs).
  • Sporting KC has lost just one of their last 12 games against Colorado dating back to 2009 (6-1-5 record). The lone loss came in the most recent meeting ā€” a 2-1 result on Aug. 29 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
  • In the first meeting at Sporting Park this season, Krisztian Nemeth scored the game-winner and Sam Cronin turned in an own goal as the hosts won 2-0.
  • Graham Zusi has three goals and four assists in 11 MLS appearances agianst Colorado (including playoffs).
  • Dom Dwyer has scored in two of his last three regular season appearances against Colorado.
  • Sporting KC and Colorado have squared off 54 times in the regular season (KC leads 23-18-13) and 68 times in all competitions (KC leads 29-23-16), making Colorado the most frequent opponent in Kansas City history.

  • SKC would clinch a fifth consecutive playoff berth with a win on Wednesday. Entering the final week of the season, the team could finish as high as the second seed or outside of playoff position in seventh place.
  • SKC has suffered just one home loss this season (9-1-5), the fewest in MLS.
  • SKC has won 13 home games this season in all competitions, one shy of tying the club record set in 2000, 2004 and 2012.
