The Swope Park Rangers hit the road this weekend as the side prepares to face Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 at UBC Thunderbird Stadium on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. CT and the game will be available via live stream on SportingKC.com.
The Rangers head into Sunday’s matchup with a 4-5-2 (14 pts.) record following Wednesday’s 4-0 triumph over Rio Grande Valley FC at Swope Soccer Village – which snapped a three-game winless streak for SPR. Two strikes from Mark Anthony Gonzalez and a Kevin Oliveira goal put the Rangers into a 3-0 lead at halftime before Daniel Salloi added a fourth in the 70th minute. Oliveira became the first player this season in MLS, NASL or USL to record three assists in one game.
Whitecaps FC 2 are 6-2-4 (22 pts.) on the season and are in a tie for first place in the USL Western Conference, but are winless in their last four following Thursday night’s 3-2 defeat against Seattle Sounders FC 2. After starting the season 6-0-2, Vancouver has gone 0-2-2 since May 25, including defeats in their last two games.
On Thursday, Whitecaps FC 2 and Sounders FC 2 both found the net from the penalty spot in the first half through Kyle Greig and Andy Craven, respectively, to make the score 1-1 at the break. Goals from Victor Mansaray and Lorenzo Ramos put Seattle into a commanding 3-1 lead before Giuliano Frano pulled a goal back for Vancouver as the game finished 3-2.
The Rangers and Whitecaps FC 2 last faced one another on April 27 when SPR hosted their first-ever game at Swope Soccer Village. Vancouver ran out 2-1 winners in that contest after Kris Tyrpak put SPR into an early lead but Whitecaps FC 2 responded with goals from Greig and Ben McKendry to take all three points. Sunday’s game will wrap up the season series between the clubs.
