Preview: Special Olympics KC hosts Special Olympics Texas as Children's Mercy Park

Special Olympics Kansas City will take on Special Olympics Texas at Children’s Mercy Park for a Special Olympics Exchange Match immediately following the MLS match between Sporting Kansas City and FC Dallas this Sunday, June 19, 2016. The match which begins at 6:30 p.m. will include two 15-minute halves and a five-minute halftime.

Both teams will experience what it is like to play on the professional level with everything from warm-ups to team introductions and the National Anthem.  Each participant will also receive a commemorative medal in a post- game Ceremony with Sporting KC Defender Kevin Ellis presenting the medals.

In 2013, MLS and Special Olympics partnered to promote awareness, respect, acceptance and inclusion of Special Olympics athletes throughout the soccer community. Through this partnership, the Unified Sports exchange program was created to unite people with and without intellectual disabilities.

Local Special Olympics chapter’s Unified Teams play in each Exchange Game immediately after the professional match on the field. MLS WORKS, Major League Soccer’s community outreach initiative, created the program.
