The Swope Park Rangers return to the field on Saturday, Aug. 27 when the side hosts LA Galaxy II at Swope Soccer Village. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. CT with a live stream available on SportingKC.com and tickets available via Ticketmaster.
The Rangers enter the weekend with a 8-9-6 (30 pts.) record and sit one point and one place outside the Western Conference playoff spots in ninth. The side is one point back of San Antonio FC – who the Rangers host on Wednesday – and are looking for their first win since July 30.
Most recently, the Rangers split the points with Saint Louis FC at Children’s Mercy Park last Sunday. The visitors took the lead in the 80th minute through Vince Cicciarelli, but the Rangers responded when debutant Akeil Barrett notched his first goal for the club in the 89th minute to earn SPR a point as the two sides split the season series 1-1-2.
LA Galaxy II have posted a 9-5-9 (36 pts.) record this season and currently sit in sixth place in the Western Conference. The Galaxy are winless in their last four games – losing three – including their most recent matchup with Orange County Blues FC last Saturday.
LA – who are without USL leading scorer Jack McBean after the forward was loaned to English League One side Coventry City on Aug. 19 – fell behind to Orange County late in the first half after a goal from Richard Chaplow. Mats Bjurman added a second after the break before LA’s Hugo Arellano and head coach Curt Onalfo were ejected from the game late on.
Onalfo is a former Kansas City Wizards head coach, having been at the helm from 2007-2009. The 46-year-old posted a 27-29-22 record with the Wizards and guided the club to the postseason in 2007 and 2008. He became LA Galaxy II’s first-ever head coach ahead of their inaugural season in 2014.
The Rangers will be hosting Back-To-School night on Saturday, with education stations set up around Children’s Mercy Victory Field at Swope Soccer Village for kids to get up to speed in all subjects. In addition, Mad Science will perform experiments on the field at the halftime interval.
