In 2010, Tommy Howe, his family and a group of friends formed the Woodson City Rangers; our top priority was the development of premier players. We turned our back on the direction taken by most of youth soccer; we were determined to remain small to maximize the development of each individual player. Woodson City’s teams would grow as a unit. The victories would flow from training and player development, not recruiting. It was also essential to our goals to make club participation accessible to players from all economic backgrounds – keeping fees at affordable levels. Finally, we wanted to return to an environment where the community of the club extended beyond the playing field, where players returned to become coaches and trainers for the next generation, to give back to the game.
In 2012, though we had just begun our journey, operating for less than two full years, Sporting Kansas City came calling. Sporting KC understood that we were taking a different direction, they liked the path we had charted and that’s why they felt we were a good fit for the Sporting Club Network and the Academy Affiliation. While our name, kit and crest have changed to acknowledge our new partnership, the philosophy and goals of our club remain the same. We’ll stay relatively small; we’ll strive to stay affordable; we’ll strive to play the most attractive, possession-based soccer in the country, and develop premier players.
