Affiliates in Action: LA Galaxy II snap Energy FC's eight-game unbeaten streak

OKC Energy FC's eight-match USL PRO unbeaten run ended Saturday as LA Galaxy II claimed a 1-0 victory in Oklahoma City.

Raul Mendiola's 75th-minute goal condemned Jimmy Nielsen's squad to their first defeat since May 25, when they lost to the same LA Galaxy II side in Carson, California. Energy FC falls to 6-8-4 on the season but remains in the eighth and final playoff spot in the USL PRO standings.

Energy FC were without midfielders Christian Duke (stress fracture) and Jimmy Medranda (rest) but featured two former Sporting KC players in the lineup as Cyprian Hedrick and Michael Thomas played the full 90 minutes. Though the first half saw few chances for either side, the match burst into life after the restart. David Leichty nearly put the hosts ahead in the 55th minute, but goalkeeper Cody Laurendi dove to push the shot wide of the post.

Just after the hour mark, Laurendi appeared to have been ejected after bringing down Steven Perry in the penalty box. However, referee Kyle Phillips rescinded the red card seconds later as Perry had been flagged offside prior to the collision. Mendiola's game-winner 15 minutes from time delivered Energy FC their first home loss since May 16 and lifted LA Galaxy II (10-5-4, 34 points) into third place.

Energy FC's setback came on the heels of a 1-1 home draw against Arizona United SC just 48 hours earlier. Medranda played the first half on Thursday before being subbed off at halftime. Forward Long Tan, who scored against Sporting KC in Orlando City FC's 1-0 U.S. Open Cup victory last year, gave Arizona United the lead in the 45th minute, but Thomas buried a 90th-minute penalty kick as the hosts' unbeaten streak reached eight games.

Saturday's sellout at Pribil Stadium drew a season-high 4,102 and capped Energy FC's six-game homestand. Nielsen's men hit the road for two contests this week, visiting the Harrisburg City Islanders on Wednesday (6 p.m. CT) and the Dayton Dutch Lions on Saturday (6 p.m. CT).
