(June 26, 2010) – Just hours after more than 12,000 screaming United States fans gathered in the Kansas City Power & Light District to watch the U.S. take on Ghana in a World Cup Round of 16 match, the Wizards played in front of a sold-out crowd at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. Unfortunately for Kansas City soccer fans, both the United States and Wizards dropped their matches. The USA lost 2-1 to Ghana after extra time, while the Wizards fell 3-0 to the New York Red Bulls.

Kansas City dictated the pace for much of the first half, taking three shots on goal to one from New York. Davy Arnaud took the game’ first shot on goal in the 21st minute, firing from long range toward the back post, but goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul smothered the opportunity.

In the second half, Kansas City nearly went on top in the 55th minute just before New York took a 1-0 lead. After a corner kick, Ryan Smith served a dangerous ball into the area that Jewsbury redirected, but his shot went out of bounds. New York ‘keeper Coundoul launched the ensuing restart deep into Kansas City territory. The ball bounced behind defenders, and New York striker Salou Ibrahim headed the ball past goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen for his 3rd goal of the season. The assist on the play went to the Red Bulls’ ‘keeper Condoul, his 2nd career assist.

Coundoul then returned to his work of keeping Kansas City off the score sheet, stopping a rocket off the foot of Kei Kamara in the 57th minute and going low to parry aside a near-post effort from Davy Arnaud in the 60th minute.

In the 82nd minute, Coundoul again played provide, becoming the first MLS goalkeeper to record two assists in a single game. Coundoul’s punt bounced inside the Kansas City area, finding striker Juan Pablo Angel, who cut inside and banged a shot low under Nielsen for his 7th goal of the season. Angel then added his 8th of the year in the 90th minute, picking up a loose ball along the goal line, moving around Nielsen and sliding into the open net. Angel is now tied for 2nd in MLS in goals, one behind Edson Buddle of the Los Angeles Galaxy.

The Wizards return to action next Saturday, July 3 with a 7:30 p.m. CT match at FC Dallas. The game will be broadcast live on KCWE 29. The Wizards will continue to host Summer of Soccer World Cup watch parties in the Power & Light District for every game of the tournament, including Sunday’s Argentina-Mexico game at 1:30 p.m. CT.
