(July 3, 2010) – The Kansas City Wizards lost 1-0 Saturday to FC Dallas in rainy Frisco, Texas. FCD #10 David Ferreira put home a second-half penalty kick for the only goal in a battle of goalkeepers. Wizards backstop Jimmy Nielsen made a season-high seven saves, while FC Dallas ‘keeper Kevin Hartman made four saves of his own for a clean sheet against his former club.

Nielsen was the first-half star, making five saves before intermission to keep his team in the match. Nielsen’s first save came in the 12th minute when he tipped a low, hard free kick off the foot of Daniel Hernandez past the post. Then in the 15th minute, Nielsen made a near-post save off a hard shot from Atiba Harris.

Nielsen made a pair of stops in the 29th minute, first stoning Harris from 19 yards, then blocking a close-range Ferreira effort with a beautiful kick save.

After halftime, the Wizards found more of the game, breaking out immediately in the 46th minute. Striker Josh Wolff made a long run in behind the defense and went down in the penalty area after a tug, but no PK was called. Then in the 51st minute, Wolff lofted a pass over two defenders to winger Chance Myers in the area, but his shot went wide of the back post without troubling Hartman.

FC Dallas then went ahead in the 58th minute when Ferreira converted from the spot. He drew the penalty one minute before after contact from Espinoza in the area. On the penalty, Ferreira slotted the ball inside the right post as Nielsen dove the opposite direction.

Kansas City continued attacking, and Hartman stoned a Jack Jewsbury shot from 15 yards out in the 68th minute. Hartman made two more saves in quick succession, first stopping a close-range effort from Graham Zusi in the 72nd minute and then keeping out a deflected free kick in the 73rd that Zusi played into the area.

The Wizards seemed to have a penalty shout in second-half stoppage time after a Zusi free kick found newly acquired defender Shavar Thomas at the back post. Thomas could not convert, however, as his jersey was pulled from behind.

Kansas City returns home next Saturday, July 10 to take on Chivas USA at 7:30 p.m. CT. For tickets to the match, visit Ticketmaster.com or call the Wizards at 888-4KC-GOAL for more information.
