SKC Launches Sporting 22 Initiative

Sporting Kansas City announced Tuesday the launch of a new community outreach program, Sporting 22 presented by Teva Neuroscience.

The Sporting 22 program is based around giving local high school students the ability to execute ideas that will positively impact the health of local children using soccer or related activities as a tool. Twenty-two applicants will be chosen, representing the 22 players on a soccer field.

Students are encouraged to submit their project ideas to SportingKansas City. Each winner will receive a $500 grant to fund their proposed activity, as well as a $2,000 college scholarship once they complete their program.

“With the launch of the Sporting 22 program, our organization hopes to further our commitment to giving back to this community,” said Sporting Club CEO Robb Heineman.

“We are proud to announce a program that focuses on improving the health and activity of our youth, while also emphasizing education. Sporting Kansas City places great importance on all of these areas, and we feel the Sporting 22 program is a great way for us to get involved.”

In addition to grant and scholarship funds, Sporting Kansas City will also provide Sporting Kansas City and Sporting 22 items, support from Sporting Kansas City staff, player visits to programs and much more.

“Teva Neuroscience is proud to be the presenting sponsor of Sporting Kansas City's 'Sporting 22' scholarship program and its mission to help area young people make a positive impact in our community,” said Greg Westbrook, Senior Director of Human Resources and Communications. “Teva's active involvement with initiatives like these reinforces our long-standing 'Pay It Forward' philosophy of giving."

Students may begin submitting their project ideas via the official Sporting 22 Scholarship and Grant Application. The application is open and submissions will be accepted until midnight CT on May 28. The 22 winners will be announced Friday, June 3rd prior to the opening of LIVESTRONG Sporting Park on June 9 against the Chicago Fire.
