Sporting Kansas City revealed their 34-game regular season schedule on Thursday for the club’s 2012 Major League Soccer campaign, highlighted by seven nationally televised matches at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park.

Sporting Kansas City, a charter member of Major League Soccer, begins its 17th season on Saturday, March 10th at D.C. United, returning to RFK Stadium where Sporting KC closed out the 2011 regular season by securing first place in the Eastern Conference with a 1-0 win.

The match will mark the seventh time in club history the two teams have met in Sporting Kansas City’s season opener, the most of any Sporting Kansas City opponent. Sporting KC is 10-4-2 all-time in season openers, the best record for First Kick matches in MLS, with only one loss in the past 10 seasons.

Sporting Kansas City’s 2012 home opener will be played one week later on Saturday, March 17 when they host the New England Revolution on St. Patrick’s Day. The highly-anticipated first home match of 2012 will be one of 10 regular season MLS matches to be held on a Saturday at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. The remaining regular season home MLS schedule features three Friday and three Sunday matches, all of which will be nationally televised, leaving the lone mid-week home date for the regular season finale on Wednesday, Oct. 24.

In Eastern Conference competition, Sporting KC will play the Philadelphia Union and D.C. United twice, coupled with three meetings scheduled against all other clubs in the East.

The eight-month season features an evenly-balanced distribution of home and away matches, with Sporting Kansas City playing no more than two consecutive road games at any point in the regular season. The club will welcome a season-high three-game homestand from Aug. 26 to Sept. 14, headlined by nationally-televised matches against the New York Red Bulls and Houston Dynamo.

Sporting Kansas City will receive bye weekends during Week 8 (April 28-29) and Week 35 (Oct. 27-28) of MLS play and the club will not play during FIFA’s official international match dates (June 1-5, June 8-12 and Sept. 7-11).

Sporting Kansas City finished with a 9-2-6 home record in 2011 during the inaugural season at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park, which will also host the 2012 CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament elimination rounds on March 31 and April 2.

Series tickets for those international matches go on sale at 10 a.m. CT on Monday, Jan. 9 for Sporting Kansas City Season Ticket Members and will be made available to the general public at 10 a.m. CT on Wednesday, Jan. 11.
