Espinoza on verge of Olympic opener

MF Roger Espinoza, still in blue and still wearing No. 15 for Honduras

Sporting Kansas City midfielder Roger Espinoza is currently with the Honduras Olympic Team as they prepare for the 2012 London Olympic Games later this month. On Thursday, Espinoza started and played the full 90 minutes in a 1-0 exhibition win over Egypt.

According to online coverage of the closed doors match, Espinoza was used in a holding midfield role and put in a strong performance as one of three overage players selected for the under-23 squad. Espinoza has been in fine form for Sporting Kansas City this season, earning a place on the 2012 MLS All-Star player ballot, and will look to make the most of his mid-season sharpness at the second major international tournament of his professional career (his first came at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa).

Wednesday's tune-up was the final friendly for Honduras before the country plays in the opening game for soccer at Olympics next Thursday against Morocco. They'll continue Group D play against Spain on July 29 and Japan on August 1
