Sporting Kansas City defeated the Houston Dynamo 1-0 on Sunday, snapping the Dynamo's 36-game unbeaten streak at home in all competition dating back to 2011. Aurelien Collin claimed the game-winner in the 73rd minute when he headed in a long throw-in from Seth Sinovic to hand the Dynamo their first loss at BBVA Compass Stadium.
Sporting Kansas City's first chance of the match arrived in the 10th minute of play, alsoinstigated by a long throw-in from Sinovic. The throw-in was volleyed out by Houston Dynamo midfielder Andrew Driver, but it fell to Oriol Rosell, who sent in a chance that was saved by goalkeeper Tally Hall.
Seven minutes later, Claudio Bieler's effort from 25 yards out was saved by Hall once again.Less than a minute later, Sinovic made an overlapping run at goal and sent in a low, in-swinging cross that was defended well and sent out for a corner kick by Corey Ashe.
The Dynamo had a chance of their own in the 25th minute when Brad Davis sent in a free kick that evaded the wall and bent right of goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen, but the 2012 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year made a diving save.
Seven minutes into the second half, Graham Zusi evaded Houston's backline, played a quick one-two with Peterson Joseph and shot from 20 yards out, but his effort was just wide of the goal. Two minutes later, Sinovic attempted a right-footed shot from distance that was saved by Hall.
Sporting Kansas City nabbed the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute when Collin flicked a long throw-in from Sinovic past Hall. The goal was Collin's second of the season and ninth in MLS competition (including playoffs).
Bieler nearly doubled the visitors lead a minute later off of an angled shot that skimped just wide of the far post.
The Dynamo nearly equalized in the 80th minute when Jason Johnson, in his MLS debut, delivered a goal-bound header that was headed out by Paulo Nagamura.
In the second minute of stoppage time, Brian Ching headed down a ball to Davis, drawing Nielsen off his line, but his attempt was blocked by the Danish keeper for his fourth save of the match. Nielsen re corded his League-leading seventh shutout of the season on Sunday.
Sporting Kansas City, now tied for second place in the Eastern Conference, will face D.C. United at 4 p.m. CT on Sunday at RFK stadium. The match will be broadcast live on KSMO-TV and La Gran D 1340 AM.
