Chance Myers nears return from injury, "good to go" Sunday vs Houston

Chance Myers' recovery from a slight hamstring strain is coming to a close, with time to spare.

“I'm close,” Sporting Kansas City's right back told after Tuesday's training session. “We're just playing it by ear now, and I'll be back out there soon.”

Manager Peter Vermes, who usually takes a more cautious stance than his players on return from injury, said Myers was more than close.

“He'll be good to go,” said Vermes, whose club hosts Houston on Sunday. “I think he's good to go right now, to be sure.”

Myers has missed three of Sporting's last four matches with the injury and also missed two matches earlier this year with a quad strain.

“I felt something two weeks ago, before the Chivas game,” he said. “We're just being smart with it, like we were at the start of the season with the quad. We've got a lot of games coming up still, and I just want to be prepared for that.”

Mechack Jerome has started every match during Myers' absence, but is scheduled to depart for international duty with Haiti after Sporting's June 1 home date against Montreal. Jerome and midfielder Peterson Joseph were called up on Monday for friendlies June 8 against Spain and June 12 against Italy.

Jerome also started both of Sporting's matches while Myers was recovering from his quad strain, with seven appearances overall.

“He's defended very well from that position,” Vermes said. “There's no doubt in my mind that he could maybe be at times a little better going forward, but that comes with a little time with our team – understanding who goes when and your anticipation of the situation, but he has adapted and adjusted well to our team at this moment, and I'm happy with his performance thus far.”
