Quotes: Sporting KC 3-0 Toronto FC

Team - Sporting KC vs Toronto FC - July 13, 2013

Sporting KC Manager Peter Vermes

Thoughts on the match...
I thought from the opening whistle to the end of the game, we dominated. Regardless of the guy that got red carded, I thought that we were excellent in possession. Very seldom did we make the wrong choice in where we played the ball. I think they had one major chance. After that I don't remember anything else happening.

On the third goal scored by forward Claudio Bieler...
The third goal was the one of the best combination goals we have scored since I've been here. We've been working on it for, I don't know, five years, but we finally got here.

Sporting KC forward Soony Saad

Thoughts on the match...
It was a full performance and it was a good team effort from the first minute to the 90th. We picked our chances and we were able to possess. It was good to get some goals and to get a shutout. Ultimately, it was really fun. It was a fun game to be a part of. It was definitely good to get the three points.

On scoring his first goal in two years...
It was definitely amazing. Especially hearing the crowd erupt. Hats off to them, they were fantastic.

On Sporting KC's recent form...
I feel like we are just hitting our stride and this is just the beginning.

Goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen

On how it feels to get the first shutout since Houston...
Of course, it's nice to have a shutout and a clean sheet. I think we did a good job to create the clean sheet today. We forced their defense to hit the long balls all the time, which is good for [Matt] Besler and [Aurelien] Collin. I think we did a good job on the second balls as well, but overall, a great performance and I'm glad we got the shutout as well.

On how Soony Saad looks in training...
It looked like [Soony Saad] was pissed that he didn't hit the winner the last time we played here and that he missed a few. We all know he has a fantastic shot and I think he once again showed he is a very valuable player for this team.

On what it looked like from the goalkeeper's box to control Toronto...
I think it was just very good soccer. It reminded me of the Montreal game a little earlier this season. It was very smart. I think we battled when we had to and we played some extremely good soccer at the right moments and when they got 10 men, we still knocked around the ball very smart.

On it being the biggest crowd in Sporting Park history...
I think week after week when we play here, [the fans] are unbelievable. And each week, you think that it can't get any better, but it's just getting better. When you come out of the tunnel, you're like, 'Wow, this is what's keeping me alive.' It is. It's vitamins and it's good medicine for me when I step on that field because it makes me feel alive and that's what I'm waking up for every morning; to come out and play those big games in front of a fantastic crowd and hopefully I can keep that going for many years.

On the dominant performance and how much it was needed...
We needed that. We set the bar now and we know what we're able to do. We have to be able to create consistency with that.

On where the team is at compared to where it wants to be...
I think we take it step by step. We proved early in the season that we can play some very good soccer, but we haven't been very consistent. Right now, we recognize the moments when it's time to battle and when it's time to play some good soccer.

Midfielder Benny Feilhaber

On the convincing 3-0 win over Toronto...
It's a good win for us. It's a good win at home in front of the fans; they deserve it. We were the better team and we showed it and that's what you need to do in MLS. Very easily, the weaker team could come in and we could suffer some setbacks, but we didn't let that happen and we played really well as a team. We pressured them, we got some good chances and we got some good goals. We didn't let them in the game.

On his performance against Toronto...
My thought was to just work my butt off because that's what's expected from every midfielder on this team. We have to press, cover for each other, win tackles, and that's really the first thing in my head. And if I'm able to do that, hopefully my technical ability will be able to come out. That was my mentality and for myself it worked today and now the goal is to just remain consistent and improve on everything.

On if this was the best performance defensively...
It's definitely up there. I'm going to watch the game and see the things that I did well and that I need to continue to work on. I felt good, I think I did the things that I needed to do for the team and now it's just being consistent.

On it being a good offensive attacking effort against Toronto...
We definitely did go forward and that's good to see because a lot of games in recent weeks I think we've got the leads and we've given them up. But today we got the lead and we didn't give a chance, didn't give them a sniff other than maybe that first shot when it was 0-0. But once we were up 1-0, we kept the ball well, we pressured well and we created good chances. Today was a good performance and a good win.

Toronto FC Manager Ryan Nelsen

Thoughts on the 3-0 loss...
All season, we've been really competitive every single game. Even at 1-0, we got our chances, but that second goal and the sending off was kind of the nail in the coffin. We've played teams just as good and didn't make those mistakes. Everyone's disappointed, but in saying that we're a team that's probably similar to Kansas City, just a few years back. We're getting better with some good, young players and players coming in.

On goalkeeper Joe Bendik's performance...
Joe [Bendik] did great. I know Joe will be disappointed on that first goal, but he made some very key saves. We made some mistakes we haven't made all year.

Toronto FC midfielder Michael Thomas

On making his Toronto FC debut against his former team...
It felt good to be back in Kansas City. But at the same time, not getting the result is all that matters, so I'm not too happy right now. It felt good to get onto the field but I just want my team to win. We can't keep our heads down because we've got another game on Wednesday.

On trying to earn playing time for Toronto FC...
I've been told I'm going to get some opportunities in the midfield, both attacking and defensive. We'll see how much time I get throughout the season, but I've just got to come in and work hard every day. If I give everything that I've got, hopefully that will turn into more playing time.

On Toronto's next match at Chivas USA on Wednesday...
It's good that we have a quick turnaround to get over this loss. We've got to recover tonight, pick it up in training and get prepared for Chivas on Wednesday. Hopefully we can get the three points because we need it right now.

Toronto FC forward Robert Earnshaw

On suffering a 3-0 defeat to Sporting KC...
It's pretty simple-they beat us convincingly. We had to do better and we were never good enough.

On Sporting KC's performance throughout the match...
They were on point and made it very difficult. Their movement was great and they were the better team. Sometimes you've just got to hold your hands up and admit you've been beaten by a great play. Their goals and some of the chances they created were brilliant. They made some great plays, but what we've got to do is think about what has happened today and learn from it.

On the atmosphere at Sporting Park...
The stadium and the fans here are incredible. The supporters really get behind their team. Kansas City was really up for it today.

On Toronto's next match at Chivas USA on Wednesday...
We'll get back to (training) tomorrow and be ready for Wednesday. In soccer, one of the best things is that as soon as you get beat, there's usually another game straight away. We'll try to put it right against Chivas.
