Fast Facts: Sporting KC 2-2 (6-7) Portland Timbers - October 29, 2015

  • Sporting Kansas City and the Portland Timbers tied 2-2 at Providence Park on Thursday after 120 minutes. The Timbers advanced to the Western Conference Semifinals after prevailing 7-6 in an 11-round penalty kick shootout.
  • Sporting KC and the Timbers met on three occasions during the 2015 MLS regular season. The first two matches ended in scoreless draws, while the third finished 1-0 in Sporting KC's favor.
  • Sporting Kansas City started two 2015 SuperDraft selections -- Amadou Dia and Saad Abdul-Salaam -- on Thursday. The last time Sporting KC started two rookies in a playoff match was November 8, 2008 (Jonathan Leathers and Roger Espinoza). The last time Sporting KC started a rookie in a playoff match was November 6, 2011 (C.J. Sapong).
  • Thursday also marked the first time in team history that Sporting KC has started two rookie draft picks at defense in a postseason match. 
  • Of the eight teams in the knockout round, Sporting Kansas City was the only club to start a rookie draft pick.
  • Peter Vermes started the same backline that started in Sporting KC's 1-0 win over the Timbers FC on Oct. 3 at Providence Park.
  • Sporting Kansas City made their fifth straight appearance in the MLS Cup Playoffs on Thursday. Only the LA Galaxy (7), Seattle Sounders (7) and New York Red Bulls (6) have longer active streaks.
  • Sporting KC went unbeaten in five trips to Cascadia clubs in 2015 (0-0 at Seattle, 1-0 at Vancouver, 0-0 at Portland, 1-0 at Portland and now 2-2 at Portland).

  • The goal was the first conceded by Sporting KC at Providence Park since April 2012.
  • Kevin Ellis equalized in the 87th minute - his fifth goal of 2015, most of any MLS defender - sending the match into extra time. His goal was the latest game-tying goal in Sporting Kansas City's postseason history.
  • Graham Zusi notched the assist, his sixth assist in MLS competition this season including the playoffs.
  • Krisztian Nemeth gave Sporting KC the lead in the first extra time period. The goal was Nemeth's 11th in MLS competition this season.

  • The Timbers equalized with two minutes remaining in the second extra time period to send the match to a penalty kick shootout. It was Maximiliano Urruti with the finish, assisted by Dairon Asprilla.
  • Thursday's shootout was the longest in MLS postseason history, breaking the record set by Sporting KC and Real Salt Lake in MLS Cup 2013. 
  • Sporting KC has now had four postseason matches decided by penalty kick shootouts in team history.
  • Paulo Nagamura is now 4-4 in penalty kick shootouts with Sporting Kansas City. The other three shootout attempts came in Cup finals in which Sporting KC were victorious.
  • Benny Feilhaber is now 3-3 in penalty kick shootouts with Sporting KC. Feilhaber was also 5-5 on penalty kick attempts during the 2015 MLS regular season.
  • Feilhaber made 48 successful passes on Thursday, most of any player.
  • Matt Besler had 10 interceptions on Thursday, most of any player.
  • Saad Abdul-Salaam made six clearances on Thursday, tied with Alvas Powell and Nat Borchers for most of all players.
