Sporting KC Academy U-18s crowned U.S. Youth Futsal national champions

Sporting KC U-18s - U.S. Youth Futsal National Champions

The Sporting Kansas City Academy U-18s were crowned U.S. Youth Futsal national champions on Monday, defeating Pittsburgh-based Ambassadors 1999 by a 6-2 scoreline in the title game at New Century Fieldhouse in New Century, Kansas.

The U.S. Youth Futsal National Championships featured 147 teams from across the country playing for titles at U-9 through U-18 levels at locations across Johnson County, Kansas. The Sporting KC Academy was represented not only by the U-18s, but the U-12s, U-13s and U-14s — each of which played up an age group and finished national runners-up.

The U-18s topped FutsalRVA (Virginia) on Friday and BRUSFA Five Guys (Illinois) on Saturday before falling to Ambassadors 1999 in Sunday’s group stage finale. Coach Jon Parry’s team responded with a 6-5 semifinal win Sunday night over Grand Rapids ABK (Michigan), setting up a rematch against Ambassadors in Monday’s national championship.

The Sporting KC U-14s were split into Argyle and Indigo squads in the U-15 age group. Argyle finished with a 3-0 record in Pool A, while Indigo went 2-1 in Pool B to ensure placement in the semifinals for both teams. Argyle snuck past Sporting Blue Valley with a 1-0 victory, while Indigo lost 4-3 to Ginga Academy (Ohio). Argyle suffered a similar fate in the championship match as Ginga Academy claimed the title with a 6-4 win.

The U-13s cruised to the U-14 title game, outscoring opponents 25-3 in the group stage before grinding out a 1-0 triumph against Roadrunners SC (Illinois) in the semifinals. However, Grand Rapids Academy (Michigan) denied Sporting KC the national championship with a 4-2 win Monday morning at New Century Fieldhouse.

The U-12s also fell just short of a national championship, falling 3-2 to AUSC Select (Illinois) in Monday’s final. Sporting KC finished pool play in the U-13 age group with a 2-0-1 record — tying AUSC Select in the first of two battles between the teams — before handling ESI 2004 (Kansas) 5-3 in Sunday’s semifinal.
