Two number one seeds fell over the weekend as the 2017 NCAA Division II Football Championship saw its field pared to eight teams. Ferris State and Texas A&M-Commerce were the big winners last weekend, knocking off top seeds Fort Hays State and Central Washington, respectively.

The tournament continues this weekend with four quarterfinal games hosted by the higher seed. The semifinals will be held on December 9 while the title match will be played on December 16 at 5 p.m. at Children’s Mercy Park. Tickets for the match are on sale now and can be purchased via SeatGeek.

Fort Hays State entered the tournament as the favorites after winning the MIAA conference with a perfect 11-0 record. However, the Tigers fell behind early on Saturday and could not claw their way back against a Ferris State team that has won nine straight games.

Indiana (Pa.) and West Alabama were the lone number one seeds to advance to the quarterfinals. Delta State’s loss guaranteed there will be a first-time champion this year as no team that has previously won a Division II Football Championship is still in the field.
