Sporting KC and defender Marcel de Jong mutually agree to terminate contract

Sporting Kansas City has mutually agreed to part ways with defender Marcel de Jong, the club announced on Tuesday.


De Jong joined Sporting KC in 2015 for his first MLS campaign after playing 10 professional seasons in the Netherlands and Germany. The 29-year-old left back contributed one goal and one assist across 15 games for the club in all competitions.


A member of the Canada Men’s National Team, de Jong has earned 42 caps since debuting for the Reds in 2007.


Tuesday’s transaction opens an international spot on Sporting KC’s roster, which now stands at 25 players ahead of the 2016 season. To view all of the club’s offseason roster moves, visit SportingKC.com/tracker.


Sporting Kansas City will kick off the club’s 21st season in Major League Soccer on Sunday, traveling to face Seattle Sounders FC at 6 p.m. CT in a nationally televised match on FS1 and FOX Deportes.
