Sporting Kansas City added two attacking options to the team on Thursday with the acquisition of 22-year-old striker William Agada and 27-year-old midfielder Erik Thommy.
Born and raised in Ulm, Germany, Thommy joins Sporting after playing in Germany since 2014. His career began at FC Augsburg before he went on a two-year loan to FC Kaiserslautern from 2014-16 and a one-year loan to Jahn Regensburg for the 2016-17 season. The midfielder became a VfB Stuttgart player in 2017, was a focal point in Fortuna Dusseldorf's game plan while on loan and just wrapped up his final season with Stuttgart.
"Sometimes you have that feeling inside, and my feeling said yes, I want to do it," Thommy said about his decision to join Sporting KC. "MLS has developed a lot in the last few years. Sporting has great facilities, great fans, a great stadium and they play attractive football."
A versatile player with the ability to play all over the field, Thommy scored 42 goals and added 33 assists over his nine-season career in Germany. In the Bundesliga, Germany's top-flight league, he bagged nine goals, recorded 14 assists and made 96 appearances.
"I am a midfielder that loves to go one-on-one," he said about his style of play. "I am a dribbler with a good right foot. I love to shoot from distance, but I am also a team player. The best word to describe me is humble."
Thommy is ready to come to Kansas City and wants to bring another MLS Cup home to Children's Mercy Park. He has studied up on Kansas City, watched Sporting KC matches and praises the fans for their energy and passion.
"Great fans, I could see it in the last few home games," he said of the Sporting faithful. "They were very loud, and they keep pushing their team in a special way without negative vibes."
