Affiliates in Action: Orlando City SC tops Energy FC to stay atop USL PRO standings

Sporting KC has partnered with USL PRO clubs Orlando City SC and OKC Energy FC for the 2014 season. As part of the agreement, Sporting KC will loan players to the clubs to play games and gain experience throughout the year. Each week, we’ll recap the performances of the Sporting KC players on loan.



Orlando City SC (5-0-2, 17 pts) won their fifth consecutive league match, a 3-1 result over OKC Energy FC (2-4-0, 6 pts), as they remain apot the USL PRO standings. Orlando City started quickly with a 2-0 lead through 34 minutes behind goals from Dennis Chin and Yordany Alvarez. Energy FC did cut the lead just before the break but Chin added his second of the match in the 48th minute. All four Sporting KC players currently on loan with both USL PRO affiliates featured in Sunday's match. 


Orlando City will next play two matches in two days as they travel to face the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Friday evening and Rochester Rhinos on Saturday night. OKC Energy FC returns home to host the Orange County Blues on Saturday.


Along with their victory on Sunday, Orlando City defeated NASL side Tampa Bay Rowdies 3-0 in the first leg of the 2014 I-4 Derby. The two sides will meet for the second leg in Tampa Bay later this summer.

The homegrown goalkeeper continues to be the regular starter in net for Energy FC, making his fifth start of the season on Sunday against Orlando.

Christian Duke (OKC Energy FC)


The Overland Park, Kan. native returned to action after missing several weeks with a hamstring injury. Duke made his fourth appearance of hte season in Sunday's match, featuring for 74 minutes and notching one shot.

Mikey Lopez (Orlando City SC)


The Generation adidas member made two second half substitute appearances this past week for the Lions. Lopez featured for 27 minutes in the I-4 Derby victory and was subbed in in the 89th minute against Energy FC.

Kevin Ellis (OKC Energy FC)


The Oak Park High School graduate made his second straight start since arriving in Oklahoma City, playing 90 minutes in Sunday's match.
