Sporting Kansas City’s 4-4 draw with the Houston Dynamo on Saturday night unraveled in thrilling, unpredictable fashion.
The result was in doubt until the final moments. That’s when Benny Feilhaber stole the show at BBVA Compass Stadium.
Major League Soccer’s assist leader continued to strike a rich vein of form in Week 8, this time opening his scoring account with a second-half brace that landed him unanimous Team of the Week recognition from MLSsoccer.com, Goal.com, Bleacher Report and NBC Pro Soccer Talk.
Feilhaber converted a clutch penalty in the 80th minute to tie the match at 3 before his spectacular volley in the 95th minute—an MLS Goal of the Week candidate—drew the teams level yet again. Saturday marked the 30-year-old’s first penalty kick goal and first brace of his MLS career.
With two goals and three assists over the last four games, Feilhaber appears to be a strong candidate for MLS Player of the Month. His two goals and five assists for the season are both two short of his regular season career highs.
Sporting Kansas City is back home Sunday to host the Chicago Fire in a nationally televised match at Sporting Park. The game will kick off at 4 p.m. CT on ESPN2 with live radio coverage on Sports Radio 810 WHB.
