Sporting Kansas City crashed out of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a 3-1 fifth round loss to the Portland Timbers on Tuesday at Sporting Park. Soony Saad scored from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute for his third goal in as many matches this month.
Saad’s penalty conversion was the club's 14th straight successful spot kick in all competitions dating back to March 2012. Kei Kamara was the last player to miss a penalty kick for Sporting KC, but atoned by scoring the game-winning goal later in the same match.
The team’s penalty kick streak also includes a 2-0 record in shootouts, as Sporting KC won the 2012 U.S. Open Cup and 2013 MLS Cup on penalties.
Dom Dwyer has buried four penalties during this stretch, while Saad, Kamara and Claudio Bieler have each netted three and Graham Zusi has contributed one.
