CCL Update: Olimpia defeats Real Esteli 1-0

Sporting Kansas City had the week off from Champions League action, but that does not mean the club was not scoreboard watching.

Sporting KC's opponents in Group 2, Olimpia and Real Esteli, squared off Wednesday night in Olimpia's group stage opener. The Honduran side defeated Esteli 1-0 in Nicaragua to pull even with Sporting KC atop their group, although Sporting KC holds the slight edge in goal differential having defeated Real Esteli 2-0 on August 7.

Although the loss to Olimpia does not mathematically eliminate Real Esteli from the competition, the road for the Nicaraguan side will only get harder with two road games left on the schedule.

For Sporting KC, they will travel to Honduras next week for what could arguably be the toughest match of the group stage. The 27-time Honduran first division champions are an experienced squad and will have a rabid fan base in their corner for next Tuesday's match in Tegucigalpa. If Sporting KC can leave Honduras with points, they will be in a strong position heading into the final two group stage matches at Sporting Park (Buy Tickets).

Elsewhere in CCL, the Montreal Impact lost to Guatemalan club Heredia 1-0 on Wednesday. The Impact are now tied with Heredia for first place in Group 5.
