Chasing Omar: A timeline for KC’s deal with Bravo

Omar Bravo faces Chivas's bitter rival, Club America.

May 8 – Chivas are eliminated from the Mexican Clausura 2010 playoffs after a 1-0 home loss to Morelia. Bravo goes 90 minutes and finishes his Clausura 2010 with 17 appearances (16 starts) and two goals.


May 11 – Bravo scores two goals in Chivas Guadalajara’s 3-0 win over Paraguay’s Libertad in the first leg of the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals.


May 18 – Chivas Guadalajara advance to Copa Libertadores semifinals despite losing in Paraguay, and Bravo goes the 90 minutes. 


May 26 – Chivas owner Jorge Vergara says his club is doing everything to keep Bravo, including helping the player negotiate with Deportivo La Coruña, who hold his contractual rights.


June 2 – Bravo’s representative, Rubén Pérez, says the player and Chivas are seeking a deal to ensure he remains with the Mexican club.


June 14 – Chivas Guadalajara preseason begins and Bravo reports for medicals.


June 26 – Bravo tells Chivas’ official site he is working hard in preseason to become the club’s all-time leading scorer and get the 17 goals in the Apertura 2010 to surpass legend Salvador Reyes (122 goals).


July 14 – In an exhibition match at Toluca, Bravo scores his first preseason goal for Chivas despite the fact that his contract situation is not yet resolved.


July 17 – Chivas announces that Bravo has signed to play for Kansas City in MLS. The player does not see action in Chivas Guadalajara’s 0-0 tie against Necaxa in the final preseason match before the start of the 2010 Apertura.


July 19 – In another press release, Chivas announces that Bravo is under contract with the club through Aug. 6 and will play matches with the club through that date. He is part of the official club photo for the season taken at the new Estadio Omnilife. 


July 24 – Bravo comes on as a second half substitute and plays 17 minutes in a 0-0 tie as Chivas opens their Mexican 2010 Apertura season. 


July 27 – Plays 90 minutes in a Copa Libertadores first leg semifinal with Chivas against Universidad de Chile which finishes 1-1. 


July 29 – Bravo’s father, Daniel Bravo, passes away at the age of 66 after a battle with liver disease. Omar Bravo misses the opening of Estadio Omnilife against Manchester United on Friday, July 30. 


July 31 – Bravo flies with Chivas to Chile for the semifinal second leg of the Copa Libertadores.


August 3 – Reports indicate that a deal has been reached to have Bravo extend his stay with Chivas should they advance to the final of the Copa Libertadores on Aug. 11 and Aug. 18. Kansas City Wizards say that Bravo is not officially a player of the club while Bravo’s representative, Rubén Pérez, says the deal is done. Meanwhile, Chivas advance to the Copa Libertadores finals with a 2-0 win at Universidad de Chile. Bravo starts and is subbed out in second-half stoppage time.


August 4 – Chivas manager José Luis Real says that Bravo is sure to be with the team for the Copa Libertadores finals although whether he will stay on for the 2010 Apertura is still unclear.


August 6 – In a late night press release, Chivas Guadalajara announce an agreement has been reached for Omar Bravo to remain with the club through December 2010. The chase is on for Bravo to become the all-time leading scorer in Chivas history.


August 12 – Kansas City Wizards president Robb Heineman tweets: “Bravo deal finally done. Starts with us in preseason.”


August 13 – Wizards make formal announcement of Bravo’s acquisition.
