Kansas City earned a 1-0 result against the Fire in suitable fashion as the victory honored the club’s founder for whom the tournament is named. The lone goal came from Igor Simutenkov five minutes into extra time at Arrowhead Stadium. Simutenkov was a stretegic second half substitute by the then-Wizards head coach Bob Gansler.
