1. RESILIENCY ON FULL DISPLAY

Sporting Kansas City concludes a road-heavy portion of the club’s 2025 schedule this weekend when the team heads out west to take on LAFC at BMO Stadium on Sunday night. The match is Sporting’s seventh road game out of their last nine dating back to April 19, with the club going 3-2-3 in that time, including a 2-2-2 mark on the road.

Sporting once again showed their powers of recovery this past weekend to claim a come-from-behind 3-1 victory over the Houston Dynamo at Shell Energy Stadium on Saturday night. Entering the match, Sporting had failed to win any of the team’s previous 19 matches when conceding first in MLS play - including an 0-6-3 record in 2025 - dating back to a 2-1 victory over Seattle on June 8, 2024.

Sporting, who recently came back from a two-goal halftime deficit both at St. Louis on May 14 and at home against New England on May 24 to pick up points, last came from behind to win a regular season road match on July 9, 2022 in a 2-1 win at CF Montreal.

Sporting has earned four results in its last six away matches (2-2-2 record) since April 19 after earning just two results in its previous 18 away matches (1-16-1 record) from April 2024 through March 2025. Head coach Kerry Zavagnin’s 15 points (4-3-3 record) are the second most by a Sporting head coach after their first 10 games in charge of the club, only trailing Curt Onalfo in 2007 (20 points).

2. ON THE ROAD AT CLUB WORLD CUP PARTICIPANTS LAFC

Sporting Kansas City remains on the road to cap a travel-heavy stretch of the season when the team heads out west to take on LAFC at BMO Stadium on Sunday night. The showdown marks Sporting’s seventh road match in their last nine games dating back to April 19.

Sporting will face an invigorated LAFC side that qualified for the FIFA Club World Cup this past weekend following a 2-1 win over Club America in the play-in game. The two sides have already met once this season, with LAFC claiming a 2-0 win at Children’s Mercy Park on March 22 following goals from David Martinez and Aaron Long either side of halftime.

Sporting last visited BMO Stadium in the 2024 U.S. Open Cup Final on Sept. 25, 2024, falling to a 3-1 defeat after extra time. Olivier Giroud gave LAFC the lead in the second half only for Erik Thommy to score a brilliant equalizer and take the game to extra time. Substitutes Omar Campos and Kei Kamara each scored in extra time to seal LAFC’s first Open Cup title. The two sides last met at BMO Stadium for a regular-season match on March 9, 2024, playing out a tight 0-0 draw.

3. JOVELJIC BAGS GAME-WINNING BRACE

Sporting Kansas City forward Dejan Joveljic continued his fine run of form with a game-winning brace in the club’s 3-1 victory over the Houston Dynamo at Shell Energy Stadium on Saturday night - resulting in a spot on the MLS Team of the Matchday.

Joveljic, who has four goals in his last three appearances, now has a team-leading nine goals in just 15 regular-season appearances this season, placing him in a tie for eighth in the MLS Golden Boot charts.

The Serbian hit a milestone with his second goal on Saturday - a stunning scissor kick that was voted MLS Goal of the Matchday - reaching 50 career goals in MLS play (regular season and playoffs combined), 41 with the LA Galaxy and nine with Sporting.

Saturday night marked Joveljic’s second two-goal performance of the season with the first brace coming in a 2-0 win over St. Louis on April 5, while it was his first two-goal performance in an MLS regular season road match since Aug. 28, 2021 in the LA Galaxy’s 3-3 draw at LAFC.

4. MUNOZ SCORES FIRST IN SPORTING BLUE

Sporting Kansas City forward Santiago Munoz got off the mark for the club this past weekend, recording his first goal for Sporting to seal the 3-1 road victory over the Houston Dynamo at Shell Energy Stadium on Saturday night.

Munoz, who arrived in Kansas City on April 24 via a loan from Santos Laguna in Liga MX, received a pass from Daniel Salloi in the 88th minute of the match and calmly slotted his effort beyond Jonathan Bond in the Houston goal to seal an important three points on the road for Sporting.

Munoz’s goal was his first since tallying against Necaxa on Sept. 1, 2024 in the Liga MX Apertura. Munoz is the fifth player to score his first goal for the club in 2025, joining Dejan Joveljic (March 1), Shapi Suleymanov (April 13), Manu Garcia (April 19) and Zorhan Bassong (April 26).

Sporting has now scored five goals via substitutes this season; only LAFC (6), San Diego FC (6) and the San Jose Earthquakes (7) have scored more.

5. SALLOI CONTINUES STRONG SEASON

Sporting Kansas City forward and Academy product Daniel Salloi continued his fine recent form, helping cap off the club’s 3-1 victory over the Houston Dynamo at Shell Energy Stadium on Saturday night with an assist on the team’s third and final goal from Santiago Munoz.

The assist was Salloi’s fourth of the season to move into a share of the team lead alongside Manu Garcia and Shapi Suleymanov, while his nine goal contributions this season (five goals, four assists), rank second most on the team behind Dejan Joveljic (10 goal contributions).

Salloi now has 41 regular season assists for Sporting in his career, breaking a tie with Johnny Russell for sixth most in club history. The 28-year-old has 112 career goal contributions (65 goals, 47 assists) for Sporting in all competitions, fourth most in club history behind only Preki (185), Graham Zusi (125) and Russell (119).
