Sporting Kansas City returns home to host LAFC at Sporting Park on Saturday night. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. CT and will be available to stream on Apple TV, while the game will also be broadcast locally on the radio via Sports Radio 810 WHB and La Grande 1340 AM. 1. BACK AMONG THE GOALS
Sporting Kansas City will look to continue the team’s uptick in goalscoring this weekend when the team hosts LAFC at Sporting Park on Saturday night.
Last weekend, Sporting scored three goals in a match for just the second time this season in a 4-3 setback against FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium, while the team set a season high with 3.1 expected goals and also recorded nine shots on target - the most in a road match since 2011.
Sporting continues to integrate the team’s summer signings as record-transfer Andre Luiz made his first start and played 58 minutes last weekend, while on-loan striker Seymour Reid made his debut for the club as a second-half substitute in Dallas. Reid became the 18th different player to debut for Sporting Kansas City this season, the most since the club’s inaugural campaign 30 years ago in 1996.
Sporting is currently 15 points adrift of the playoff line in the Western Conference with 11 matches left to play in 2026 as the team continues to rebuild heading into the 2027 MLS Sprint Season and beyond.
2. HOSTING DANGEROUS LAFC
Sporting Kansas City returns home this weekend to play host to a dangerous LAFC side at Sporting Park on Saturday night. LAFC currently occupies third place in the Western Conference, led by lethal duo Denis Bouanga and Son Heung-Min.
Sporting visited BMO Stadium earlier this summer, falling to a 4-0 defeat against LAFC on July 25, 2026. Sporting controlled possession for most of the match and the two teams were level with eight shots apiece, but LAFC showed their quality in transition to race into a three-goal halftime lead through Son, Bouanga and David Martinez before Bouanga bagged a second late on.
Sporting last hosted LAFC at Sporting Park in the early throes of last season, suffering a 2-0 defeat on March 22, 2025 with Martinez tallying in the first half and Aaron Long sealing the points in the second stanza.
Sporting trails the all-time regular-season series against LAFC 4-10-2 and are winless in 10 since the team’s last win - a 4-1 victory on Aug. 4, 2021 at BMO Stadium.
3. CALHEIRA DELIVERS BREAKOUT PERFORMANCE
Sporting Kansas City striker Taylor Calheira added the goals that his recent performances have merited on Saturday when he tallied his first two goals for the club and his first two MLS goals in the team’s 4-3 setback against FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium.
Calheira got Sporting off to a dream start when he fired home the rebound after Capita Capemba had seen his shot saved in the fourth minute of the game - the first goal that Sporting has scored in the opening 15 minutes all season.
With the team trailing 3-2 heading into the closing stages of the game, Calheira delivered again when he expertly headed home Emir Karic’s cross to set up a grandstand finale that Dallas ultimately got the better of. Calheira became the first Sporting player with a multi-goal game since Dejan Joveljic scored twice in Sporting’s home opener on Feb. 28, 2026.
Calheira signed with Sporting in a transfer from USL Championship side FC Tulsa in February 2026 following a productive season in the second division where he tallied 21 goals and four assists. Calheira last scored in the 2025 USL Championship playoffs, bagging a brace on Nov. 15, 2025 for FC Tulsa.
4. AFRIFA CONTINUES FINE FORM
Sporting Kansas City forward Stephen Afrifa tallied once again this past weekend, when his high press led to an errant pass from FC Dallas captain Ramiro that Afrifa deflected into the back of the net in the first half of Sporting’s eventual 4-3 defeat to FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium on Saturday night.
Afrifa now has three goals on the season, tied with Calvin Harris for the most on the active roster, and he has tallied in back-to-back road games after also scoring in the 2-1 loss to Atlanta United at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Aug. 23.
Afrifa now has nine goals and four assists across all competitions for the club and his nine goals lead the current roster following the departure of Dejan Joveljic last month. Afrifa’s 13 goal contributions rank second on the active roster, trailing Jake Davis’ 17 (three goals, 14 assists).
In addition, the Canadian’s 13 goal contributions have come in just 1,774 minutes played as Afrifa typically deputizes as a substitute - meaning that he averages 0.66 goal involvements per 90 minutes.
5. AGYABENG & KARIC NOTCH FIRST ASSISTS
Sporting Kansas City duo Kwaku Agyabeng and Emir Karic each recorded their first assists for the club this past weekend, combining to set up Taylor Calheira’s second goal of the night in the 78th minute of the team’s 4-3 defeat to FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium on Saturday night.
Agyabeng, 20, joined Sporting as a Generation adidas player after being selected fourth overall in the 2026 MLS SuperDraft out of Clemson. The Ghanaian has made 15 appearances in his rookie season, including five starts, and went the full 90 for the first time on Saturday.
Karic, 29, who received a pass from Agyabeng and whipped in a pin-point pass for Calheira for the assists, joined Sporting in June from Austrian giants Sturm Graz and has played the most minutes of any of Sporting’s summer arrivals with 720 since debuting on July 16 at St. Louis.
