1. AIMING TO CLOSE OUT SEASON STRONG

Sporting Kansas City was officially eliminated from MLS Cup Playoff contention on Wednesday night following the team’s 4-0 defeat to runaway Supporters’ Shield leaders Nashville SC at GEODIS Park and now heads into this weekend’s matchup with Real Salt Lake at Sporting Park looking to close out the season strong with three home games in their final five matches.

Sporting has enjoyed an uptick goalscoring form at home over the past month, scoring nine goals in the team’s three home matches since Sept. 12, 2026. While the team has split those three matches 1-1-1, the team has scored three goals in three straight MLS regular season home games for only the second time in club history (July 2016).

After conceding four times on the road midweek, Sporting has now set an unwanted club record with 72 goals conceded this season, surpassing the previous record of 70 set in 2025. Sporting will be aiming to avoid setting a new MLS record in goals conceded (78) over the final five games of the season.

Sporting is in the midst of a hectic month of October that will see the team play seven matches - including games on the first day (Oct. 1 at Seattle) and final day (Oct. 31 vs. Dallas) of the month - with the squad playing home matches on four straight weekends on Oct. 10, 17, 24 and 31.

2. HOME TO HOST OLD RIVALS

Sporting Kansas City returns home this weekend to host longtime rivals Real Salt Lake at Sporting Park on Saturday night, looking to build on improved home form over the past six weeks.

Sporting has already faced RSL once this season, falling to a 3-1 defeat early in the campaign at America First Field on April 4, 2026. Diego Luna gave the hosts an early lead before Sergi Solans added a second after halftime, only for Sporting to respond through Dejan Joveljic. RSL sealed the points late on when Zavier Gozo scored a stunning volley from the edge of the area to make the final score 3-1.

Sporting last hosted Real Salt Lake midway through the 2025 season, earning a point in a 1-1 draw at Sporting Park on June 28, 2025. Former Sporting star Johnny Russell opened the scoring for RSL on his return to Kansas City before Erik Thommy’s strike from the edge of the area sealed a point for the hosts.

Sporting trails the all-time regular-season series 13-20-10, including a 7-6-7 mark at home, and has won just five of the last 27 meeting between the two sides.

3. ANDRE SETTING MLS ALIGHT

Sporting Kansas City record-signing Andre Luiz has set Major League Soccer alight since his summer arrival from Olympiacos FC in the Greek top flight, scoring seven goals and adding an assist in his first eight appearances for the club.

Andre was used sparingly during Wednesday night’s 4-0 defeat to Nashville SC at GEODIS Park, with head coach Raphael Wicky confirming postgame that his removal at halftime was pre-planned as the team manages his minutes heading into Saturday’s clash with Real Salt Lake at Sporting Park.

After scoring a brace in the 3-3 draw against the Portland Timbers at Sporting Park last weekend, Andre became the first player in Sporting history with seven goals in his first seven appearances for the club, while he also became one of only three players to score in five consecutive matches, joining Preki (goals in five straight games in 1996) and Johnny Russell (goals in eight straight games in 2021).

Andre broke out during the first half of the 2025-2026 season with Rio Ave FC in Portugal, tallying seven goals and six assists in 19 matches - including a stunning strike against Benfica. After a brief spell at Olympiacos, Andre joined Sporting in August and has so far proven to be more than a handful against MLS defenses, currently ranking first in club history with 0.88 goals per game in a single season.

4. THREE TEENAGERS START FOR FIRST TIME IN CLUB HISTORY

In a club first, Sporting Kansas City started three teenagers during the club’s 4-0 defeat to Nashville SC at GEODIS Park on Wednesday night.

Ian James (18) started at right back while up front Seymour Reid (18) and Ruben Ramos Jr. (19) also were handed their first starts for the club since joining on loan on deadline day. It marked the first time in the club’s 31-year history that the team had started three teenagers in the same regular-season match.

James went 69 minutes at right back before being replaced by the returning Jake Davis, while Reid played the opening 53 minutes and was replaced by Taylor Calheira. Ramos went the full 90 for the first time in his MLS career, coming in his 18th appearance and fourth start.

5. DAVIS & CAPITA RETURN FROM INJURY

Sporting Kansas City duo Jake Davis and Capita Capemba each made their returns from injury midweek, taking their places among the team’s substitutes during the 4-0 defeat against league-leaders Nashville SC at GEODIS Park.

Davis suffered a knee injury during the team’s 2-1 loss to Atlanta United at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Aug. 23, 2026 and made his return to action with a lively 21-minute cameo off the bench on Wednesday night. The versatile midfielder will be pushing for more minutes as the team heads into the home stretch with five games remaining beginning with Saturday’s showdown with Real Salt Lake.

Capita, who was an unused substitute on Wednesday, returned after missing the last month with a hamstring injury sustained in the 4-3 defeat to FC Dallas on Sept. 5, 2026. While back fit and training last week, the Angolan was forced to miss the 3-3 draw with Portland last Saturday due to a FIFA regulation stating that a player who declines to report for national team duty when called up during a FIFA window must miss their club matches up to five days after the window has ended.

Sporting’s appearance leader among the active roster, Davis has deputized in central midfield and at right back throughout the season, tallying three assists in 22 appearances across all competitions. Capita is in his first season with the club after arriving from Radomiak Radom in Poland and has tallied two goals and one assist in 17 matches, while he has recorded the fastest top speed in MLS this season at 23 mph.
