The Swope Park Rangers host their regular-season finale when the side takes on Seattle Sounders FC 2 at Swope Soccer Village on Saturday, Sept. 24, knowing a win will clinch a top four finish and a home playoff game. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. CT and the game will be live streamed via SportingKC.com while tickets are available on Ticketmaster.
The Rangers enter the contest with a 13-10-6 (45 pts.) record having won five of the side’s last six games as the team has surged into a playoff position over recent weeks. SPR completed their final road swing of the regular season last week, claiming 3-0 and 3-1 wins over OKC Energy FC and Tulsa Roughnecks FC to put the side in contention for a top four finish in the Western Conference.
In Wednesday’s victory over Tulsa, the Rangers found the net early and often as the side swept the season series with the Roughnecks, going 4-0-0. Kris Tyrpak put his side ahead in just the fifth minute, before Dane Kelly added a second four minutes later. Tulsa’s leading scorer Sammy Ochoa gave his side some hope with a 19th-minute penalty kick to cut the Rangers’ lead in half, but Tyrpak volleyed home his seventh of the season in the 27th minute to complete the scoring.
Seattle are all but eliminated from playoff contention, going 9-12-8 (35 pts.) this season. Sounders FC 2 requires a win on Saturday, coupled with favorable results around the league and 16-goal swing in goal differential.
Seattle saw their realistic playoff hopes dashed last weekend following a 2-1 loss at Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC. Rony Argueta put the home side ahead with a powerful effort from distance in the eighth minute, but Seattle hit back in the 29th minute through leading scorer Darwin Jones. In the final minute of play, the Switchbacks took the lead when Mike Seth tucked home a composed finish in a heartbreaking end to the game for Sounders FC 2.
The Rangers are hosting Fan Appreciation Night during Saturday’s game, with $1 hot dogs, the final installment of the commemorative poster series and a postgame team signing and meet and great all featured. A full list of gameday festivities is available here.
