Sporting Kansas City associates and players recently came together to make a meaningful impact in the local community through two heartfelt volunteer events, celebrating Earth Week and the MLS Greener Goals Initiative. These initiatives brought together passionate individuals dedicated to fostering a healthier and more sustainable Kansas City.

Urban Produce Push (UPPKC): Tuesday, April 21

On a sunny Tuesday, volunteers gathered at the Pendleton Heights Community Garden, a vibrant space dedicated to nourishing the neighborhood. Urban Produce Push’s mission is to fight hunger, improve nutrition, and reduce food waste by delivering fresh, nutrient-dense produce to food-insecure areas in the Greater Kansas City region.
With enthusiasm, volunteers rolled up their sleeves to prepare the garden for the growing season. They engaged in various tasks, including:

  • Cleaning up the garden by picking up sticks and weeding, transforming the space into a welcoming environment.
  • Turning soil, adding compost, and planting a variety of vegetables and plants, all while sharing stories and laughter.
  • Watering the gardens, ensuring that every plant received the care it needed to thrive.

Among the volunteers were players Cielo Tschantret, Ethan Bartlow, and Jayden Reid, who brought their energy and camaraderie to the event, connecting with community members.

Kanbe’s Markets: Thursday, April 23

That same week, the team shifted their focus to Kanbe’s Markets Warehouse, where the mission is all about inclusivity and access to food. Kanbe’s Markets works tirelessly to transform food loss into food access, serving the most vulnerable in the Kansas City Metropolitan area while reducing waste that could otherwise harm the environment.

Volunteers at this event immersed themselves in the mission, helping to create a more equitable food system. They:

  • Sorted through incoming donated produce, such as fresh vegetables and meat, ensuring that those in need would have access to nutritious meals.
  • Cleaned and organized crates, creating an efficient flow for the distribution of food to the community.
  • Assisted staff in prepping the warehouse, even painting two walls to brighten the space and make it more welcoming.

These events not only emphasized Sporting KC's commitment to community engagement and environmental sustainability but also fostered a sense of togetherness among participants. The shared experiences, laughter, and dedication to helping others strengthened the bonds within the community, proving that when we come together, we can cultivate change and nurture hope for a brighter future.
