As a well-known and highly respected educator in the North Kansas City School District for nearly three decades, Bell Prairie Elementary School kindergarten teacher Jen Bianco has used her skills and talents to educate the youngest learners in our community, as they begin their elementary school journey.
“There is simply nothing better than creating an environment where kids discover new skills, build confidence, make new friends, and develop a love of learning,” said Bianco. “Our leadership team fosters a culture of collaboration, trust, and shared decision-making while maintaining high expectations. I feel valued, supported, and encouraged to have a voice, which creates an environment where everyone can grow.”
Bianco’s ability to navigate the complexities and challenges of teaching a classroom of kindergarteners is an impressive compliment on her character, dedication and commitment to furthering their education. She prioritizes her students and is willing to accommodate their requests in order to create an atmosphere that focuses on learning.
“In my classroom, we celebrate each child’s unique strengths, interests and backgrounds,” said Bianco. “We create an environment where every student feels safe, respected, valued and included. Together, we build a classroom family by encouraging collaboration, kindness, empathy, and respect so every child knows they belong from day one.”
Her messages and pieces of advice are simple, yet effective. Bianco always reminds her students to smile and be kind to one another. By remembering those two small traits, the mood, energy, and overall feel within the room can be uplifted and help her kindergarteners feel comfortable to engage, participate, and enjoy their school day.
“My teaching style is energetic and student-centered,” said Bianco. “My team and I strive to meet each child where they are while also creating engaging and meaningful learning experiences that encourage curiosity and confidence. Learning should be fun, purposeful, and filled with opportunities for every student to succeed.”
To deem a school year successful, Bianco measures student growth academically, as well as individual social and emotional gains. She takes pride in working throughout the year to build strong relationships with all her students and their families. This approach, in her mind, is equally as important as helping them reach, attain, and exceed their learning goals.
“Establishing clear expectations while providing consistent routines and structure helps students feel safe, confident, and ready to learn,” said Bianco. “A positive classroom environment allows students to focus on learning, take risks, and build confidence as they grow. These life skills not only help them throughout the school year, but also prepare them for success beyond the kindergarten classroom.”
When it came to teaching, Bianco knew she wanted to focus on kindergarteners once she was in awe at the kindergarten experience her own son had. She saw him thrive and was then inspired to earn her Early Childhood certification. Immediately afterwards, she made the transition to the kindergarten classroom and hasn’t looked back.
“The best advice I’ve ever received is to remember that relationships come first,” said Bianco. “When students know they are loved, valued, and respected, they are willing to take risks, work hard, and reach their full potential.”
“Jen is the kind of teacher who reminds us that the most important lessons in kindergarten are not just letters and numbers – they are kindness, empathy, and community,” said Bianco’s nominator, Andrea Holmes. “She helps 5- and 6-year-olds understand what it means to encourage a classmate, celebrate differences, and show compassion. Whether a student is having a bad day, feeling left out, or facing an illness/injury, her classroom culture inspires her students to notice others and respond with empathy. Her influence extends beyond the walls of Bell Prairie Elementary School and into the lives of her students and their families; especially during life’s difficult moments.”
