Sporting KC midfielder Lawrence Olum started for Kenya on Sunday in a scoreless draw with Lesotho at Nyayo National Stadium. Despite the clean sheet, Kenya was eliminated from 2015 African Cup of Nations qualifying on aggregate after suffering a 1-0 loss in the away leg two weeks earlier.
Olum made his third career international appearance for the Harambee Stars since making his competitive debut in May. Previously, he started a pair of matches against Comoros in the previous round of AFCON qualifying.
His performance in his native Nairobi on Sunday was praised by SuperSport.com writer Collins Okinyo following the match...
Olum has made 59 appearances in MLS competition (including playoffs) over four seasons with Sporting Kansas City since being acquired in 2011. The 30-year-old has featured as both a central defender and defensive midfielder in 2014, making 11 starts in 15 total appearances and leading Sporting KC to a 9-1-1 record this season when in the starting lineup.
Olum has a career-high two goals, both game-winning tallies, in 2014. He will re-join Sporting Kansas City this week and is expected to be available for selection by Manager Peter Vermes on Sunday when the reigning MLS Cup champions take on the Vancouver Whitecaps FC at 7 p.m. CT at BC Place.
