Marcel de Jong and the Canadian Men's National Team earned a 1-0 victory over Honduras on Friday in front of 20,000 fans at BC Place. De Jong went 90 minutes in his 40th international appearance in Canada's pursuit for a berth in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

During the last WCQ cycle (2012), Honduras earned an 8-1 victory in the fixture, arguably the worst loss in Canada's history as it eliminated them from advancing to the final round of World Cup qualifying.

The lone goal on Friday came in the 38th minute with a solid build up beginning with Canada's Cyle Larin. Orlando City's record-breaking rookie found David Junior Hoilett on the left flank. Hoilett sent a ball to the back post for an unmarked Will Johnson. The Portland Timbers captain headed the ball on frame, grazing slightly off Larin and into the back of the net.

Larin, 20, was recently named MLS Rookie of the Year for his 17-goal season with former Sporting KC USL affiliate Orlando City SC.

Canada continues qualifying on Tuesday, facing El Salvador on the road. The top two teams in the group, which also includes Mexico, will advance to the final round of qualifying.
