MLS Re-Entry Draft Stage 2 set for Thursday

Josh Gardner - May 5, 2013

Stage 2 of the MLS Re-Entry Draft will take place today at 2 p.m. CT via conference call. Similar to Stage 1, Sporting Kansas City will have the No. 9 selection.

The rules for the second stage of the draft are different from the first stage. In the first stage, if a team selected a player whose option was declined, that team was obligated to pick up the player's option. If a team selected a player who was out of contract, the team was obligated to make a bona fide offer to that player. Only three players were selected in the first phase including former Sporting KC goalkeepers Eric Kronberg (Montreal Impact) and Andy Gruenebaum (San Jose Earthquakes).

In today's draft, if a team selects a player, that club will have seven days to offer the player a bona fide offer, and if an agreement cannot be reached with in seven days, the club will hold the right of first refusal for that player.

Any players not selected in Stage 2 become available to any MLS club on a first-come, first-served basis. One caveat to today's draft is that teams may not draft their own players until all other teams have passed.
